Responsibilities

The Mess Person(s) may be responsible for:

* Working under the supervision of the chief steward.
* Cleaning/sanitation duties on the ship such as:

* Cleaning specified decks
* Cleaning the galley area (washing dishes/silverware, cleaning shelves, trash removal, etc.).
* Assisting the chief steward and cook/baker in the preparation of meals by retrieving stores and performing basic food preparations (peeling potatoes, cutting fruit, etc.).
* Taking orders and serving meals.
* Assisting in putting up stores upon arrival of the ship.
* Assisting the chief steward and cook/baker as directed
* Mandatory participation in emergency training drills.
* Participating as a general support worker and developing a good knowledge of all galley cleaning and sanitation operations/duties noted in the general work description.
* Typically works from 0615 to 1300 hours, takes a 2 hour break, and then works from 1500 to 2015 hours (includes 4 overtime hours).

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

* Passport
* Legally authorized to work in the United States on a regular full-time basis without restrictions
* High School Diploma / GED
* Willingness and ability to:

* To be away from home for periods in excess of two months
* Push up to 35 pounds
* Pull up to 40 pounds
* Stand up lift up to 60 pounds
* Level lift up to 60 pounds
* Weight carry up to 60 pounds
* Overhead lift up to 31 pounds
* Climb Stairs
* Stand for long periods of time
* Merchant Mariners Document (Z-card)
Preferred:

* Willing and able to

* Work overtime 4 hours a day
* Perform 3 or more hours of washing pots and pans each shift, as well as mopping floors

* 3 years or more of direct experience in institutional food preparation
* Completion of sanitation class
* Completion of basic safety class
* Previous experience sailing on tanker/ship

All unlicensed employees earn paid leave on the basis of twenty-three (23) days paid leave for every thirty (30) days of sea service. Normal tours are seventy-five (75) onboard and fifty-seven (57) days of paid leave.
