Position Summary

The heavy oil R&D Conceptual Process Design Engineer develops and directs research programs to better understand heavy oil processing and energy generation. The ability to provide data that supports heavy oil capital projects and technologies is critical. This includes acquiring and analyzing data from pilot plants, commercial refineries and upstream facilities, third party technologies, and ConocoPhillips partners and vendors to develop a body of knowledge for future projects and research. The ability to communicate learnings is critical to the success of this position.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the R&D Conceptual Process Design Engineer may include:

Managing one or more research programs

*
Providing oversight for R&D-SS pilot plant personnel

*
Analysis of pilot plant data

*
Documentation of research data and analysis

*
Providing oversight for outside contractors/pilot plants/laboratories

*
Presenting data and analysis to field operations customers

*
Working with other researchers to solve problems

*
Developing proposals for new research programs based on need and results of current research

*
Developing working relationships with vendors and researchers

*
Performing process optimizations and simulations

Qualifications

Basic/Required Qualifications

*
PhD Degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering

*
Graduate level course work in: Fluid Mechanics AND Thermodynamics AND Heat Transfer

Preferred Qualifications

*
Modeling experience with AspenPlus, HYSYS or PRO/II

*
Knowledge of boilers and water requirements commonly used in power engineering

*
Familiar with emission reduction processes for SOx, NOx, and Particulates

*
Understanding of CO2 capture technologies

*
Excellent interpersonal skills

*
Good verbal and written communication skills

*
Self-starter with excellent work ethic
